Merry Christmas to all!
This year marked the 75th anniversary of D-Day and in The Queen's Christmas Broadcast Her Majesty reflects on the commemorations.
“For the Seventy-Fifth Anniversary of that decisive battle, in a true spirit of reconciliation, those who had formerly been sworn enemies came together in friendly commemorations either side of the Channel, putting past differences behind them...” The Queen.
“By being willing to put past differences behind us and move forward together, we honour the freedom and democracy once won for us at so great a cost.”

35 англійських слів, які змінюють своє значення залежно від наголосу
Щоб утворити нове слово, зазвичай потрібно додати суфікс або префікс. А ви знали, що в англійській для цього іноді достатньо просто поміняти наголос? Такий фокус можливий тільки з деякими словами, їх нескладно запам’ятати.
У цих англійських словах разом зі зміною наголосу відбувається зміна частини мови. Якщо ударний склад — перший, перед нами іменник. А якщо другий, то ми маємо справу з дієсловом або прикметником. Іноді значення іменника та дієслова/прикметника в цьому випадку залишається близьким, а іноді змінюється. Подивімось, як це відбувається.
Англійський іменник або дієслово з близьким значенням
ADD-ict — схиблений на чомусь; наркоман
add-ICT — захоплюватися, віддаватися, (в пасивному стані) мати залежність
Some drug ADDicts turn to crime in order to support their habit.
I tried to give up smoking several times before I realized I was addICTed.
AD-dress — адреса
ad-DRESS — адресувати, звертатися
You should write the full ADdress on the envelope.
The president should be adDRESSed as ‘Mr. President’.
CON-flict — ворожнеча, розбіжності, конфлікт
con-FLICT — суперечити; битися
